This article examines to what extent the Charter Party Agreement is an appropriate tool for incorporating an environmental Corporate Social Responsibility clause. This is done against the backdrop of the existing Slow Steam Shipping clause. It examines whether contractual consequences, in terms of liability, could be linked to the inclusion of such a clause. It follows from this study that the success of incorporating such clauses depends on the willingness of the parties involved and the commitment to incorporate specific, measurable and time-locked provisions in relation to achieving their environmental goals. Due to increasing pressure from consumers, manufacturers and the public on the ‘clean’ shipping of goods by sea, the inclusion of such a clause in a Charter Party Agreement will become more desirable and acceptable.
